WIP Wednesday: Back To School

Image

Happy Wednesday! Today’s the day the kids in my area go back to school after Summer Break. For many parents around here, this is indeed a very happy Wednesday. 😉 For me it means my friends are a little more available during the day, and that my two months of easy parking around my apartment are over as the high schoolers take all the spots. C’est la vie.

The Hook

I didn’t get much crocheting done this week as I was in a mad dash to get the monsters completed for my niece and nephew’s birthday party on Monday. However, in light of the “back to school theme,” I decided to try a new-to-me granny square.

Ta da!

The Book

Ah, Hogwarts. How I’ve missed your enchanted halls! Your stately spires! Your creepy three-headed dogs in locked corridors! Well, maybe not that last one. So good to be on the train back to school!

The Needles

As usual, the bulk of my time has been spent on knitting or finishing work. I needed to get Hugo and Bea finished for Jonah and Carly before their birthday party on Monday. They were done with time to spare!

Jonah and Carly love them! I’ll give Hugo and Bea their own post on Friday.

Incidentally, Jonah is going back to school today. He started the First Grade!

Unfortunately, I was also trying to get a monster done for their mom, Heidi, and was not successful.

I did manage to get the body done and one arm attached. The plan was to attach the second arm once I arrived at the house and finish the legs during the party. That went out the window when I realized that I’d left the other arm at home. Doh! So, Heidi got this:

Along with the promise that I would finish her monster and deliver it very soon.

So, that’s what I’m currently working on. Heidi’s monster is an amalgamation of three monsters from The Big Book of Knitted Monsters: Harold (body and extremities), Gort (stripes), and Dot (ears). I have one foot done, and one very nearly done.PhotoEditor-1441826641245

The feet are the most fiddly part. The legs will be relatively straightforward.

After I’m done with Harold/Gort/Dot, I need to start working on a Milo for an upcoming baby shower.

And that’s all the news that’s for to print. 😉 What’s your news? Let me know in the comments.

See you at the Yarn Along!

WIP Wednesday: Two In A Row

Woohoo! I’m linking up with the Yarn Along two weeks in a row! Such a silly, simple, yet daunting accomplishment. I might just get the hang of this blogging thing yet. 😉  On to my progress report.

The Hook

I’ve made no progress here this week as I’ve been mostly focused on knitting. I’ve made great progress in that area. Still, here’s a gratuitous picture of my afghan in progress.

One day, it will completely cover the bed. I may be 80 at this rate, though. 🙂

The Books

IMG_20150505_115338_096~2

Truth be told, I haven’t done much reading this week, either. Gah! I love both books. It’s that old “read or knit” conundrum, and knitting has been winning out.

The Needles

So here is where the bulk of my free time has been going.

IMG_20150505_115512_728~2

If you’ll remember, last week I only had the collar of this little sweater completed. Today, I’m nearly to the hem! I’m trying desperately to beat little one’s arrival, or finish it as soon after little one is born as possible. Ive been searching for a bit of lace to add to the hem, but can’t come up with a pattern I like or that fits the stitch count. Next time I knit one of these, I’ll pick a lace pattern earlier so I can accommodate it when working the underarm section where it won’t be obvious. In the mean time, I think I’ll finish this off with the garter hem in the pattern.

It may not be obvious in the photo, but I’ve made significant progress on my Baktus. The progress seems to go slower as the rows get wider. I suppose that’s true for any shawl…er…scarf… Scawl? Sharf? Whatever you want to call it. I’m loving the colors in this yarn, although I’m really hoping my friend doesn’t find it too rough around her neck.

That about does it for me this week. What are you crafting or reading? Let me know in the comments, or, better yet, come join us over at the Yarn Along!

Have a great Wednesday!

WIP Wednesday: More Than I Can Chew?

It’s the wee hours of Wednesday, and I’m sitting in a rocking chair in a dimmly lit room across from a two year-old who will not go to sleep for the life of him. Or, I should say, back to sleep. He was asleep for an hour before some inexplicable thing caused him to wake two hours ago. *sigh* Now, he has his proverbial second wind, partly, I’m sure, due to the newness of me. He doesn’t remember, but I took care of him when he was an infant. Anyway, it’s too dim to read or knit, and he refuses to be cuddled or rocked, so I think I shall get some blogging done.

The Hook

I’ve been neglecting my crochet in favor of my various knitting projects. However, Sandra over at Cherry Heart has started a Blanket Along for the month of March, and that is perfect incentive to pick up my hook again and make some progress on my Magnum Opus. If you’re new or just don’t remember (it’s been a while), my Magnum Opus is an afghan I’m trying to make for my bed. It’s going to be between Full and Queen sized. So far, I am only about a quarter of the way finished with the squares. It’ll be interesting to see how big of a bite I can take out of the remainder.

The Book

IMG_20150303_103312_597~2

Well…here’s where I should say that I’m still reading God For Us. I’d love to say that but the truth is that I’ve hardly touched it this week. I keep meaning to do better and actually read my daily readings, but it never seems to happen. In a way, not being able to do this perfectly (and really, who can?) just highlights for me that I really do need the grace and mercy Jesus gives. There is no way to be perfect on my own…and isn’t that the whole reason He came in the first place?

Embracing The Body is a brand new book by a brand new author, my friend Tara. I have mentoned Tara before. She is a Spiritual Director at Anam Cara Ministries, and I did my Advent retreat with her. This book has been eagerly anticipated, and I’ve been privileged to witness its birth over the past year or so. I’ve only just taken a taste, so to speak, and I can tell that this is a book I will have to read slowly and thoughtfully, savoring each bite. I’m only through the introduction, and already pages are dog-eared and lines are underlined, bracketed, and starred. I think the best way to give you all a peek is to quote the back cover:

“Our bodies teach us about God, and God communicates to us through out bodies. Our bodies are more good than we can possibly imagine them to be. And yet at times we may struggle with feelings of shame and guilt or even pride in regard to our bodies. What is God trying to do through our skin and bones?

In Embracing The Body, spiritual director Tara Owens invites you to listen to your thoughts about your body in a way that draws you closer to God, calling you to explore how your spirituality is intimately tied to your physicality. Using exercises for reflection at the end of each chapter, she guides you to see your body not as an inconvenience but as a place where you can meet the holy in a new way—a place to embrace God’s glorious intention.”

I’m excited. I’m excited to see what God has for me in the pages of this book…and beyond as we journey through it, He and I.

I’m making steady progress on Lexie’s bloom. I’m into the second diamond lace section. Her first birthday is at the end of the month, so I’ve got to have it done by then.

And that about covers it. See you at the Yarn Along!

Have a blessed Wednesday!

PS: Little Rascal finally conked out again around 2 am!
