Compassion Tuesday: Spotlight on Theleza

Image

While it is now the wee hours of Wednesday, I don’t want to skip my Compassion Tuesday post for this week. Tonight I’d like to introduce you to Theleza.

Theleza is 8 years old and lives near Lake Victoria in Tanzania. She is my second sponsor child from that country.

My first sponsor child from Tanzania was a girl named Pascalina. I sponsored her for about 12 years until she left the Compassion program around the age of 17.

I’ll give Pascalina her own post at a later time.

When Pascalina left the program, Compassion sent me info on another little girl in Tanzania who needed a sponsor.

Just like with Sakthi, I had already made up my mind to sponsor whichever child Compassion sent me, and so my relationship with Theleza began in January 2013.

Theleza lives with her Grandma. She has one sibling, but I cannot remember if he or she is older or younger. Part of the reason is that Theleza’s letters are not very informative at this stage.

Due to her age, Theleza’s letters are in a “fill in the blank” format. She usually draws me a picture, but doesn’t typically write anything beyond one or two word answers to the questions on the letter form.

To be honest, it’s a little frustrating because I do really want to get to know her better. That will come with time, I’m sure. I did get some great info from Compassion on the region where Theleza lives. That helps me imagine her life a little better.

I’m looking forward to many more years as her sponsor.

Compassion began its work in Tanzania in July 1999. There are currently more than 72,100 children in Compassion’s program in over 305 projects. I just checked, and there are 59 children from Tanzania currently listed on Compassion’s website who are awaiting sponsors. Would you consider ending the wait for one of them?

WIP Wednesday: A Square, A Wizard, and A Milo

Writer’s block.

Here’s my weekly update.

The Hook

I got another square done on Magnum Opus. That makes 32 squares, and of those, only 10 have their ends woven in. At this rate, I should have all the squares done by next October. 😛

Currently, my afghan measures about 40 x 48 inches and is only ⅓ of the way finished.

I think I aughta pick up the pace. 😉

The Book

I’m still hanging out with Harry during his first year at Hogwarts. Ordinarily a book this short would not take me more than a day or two, but I’ve been pretty busy.

First Years at Hogwarts may bring a cat or an owl or a toad. I always thought I’d choose the owl being such useful creatures. Now, I’d take a cat any day.

The Needles

I have been procrastinating a bit on finishing Heidi’s monster. The feet need finishing work and stuffing before I can finish the legs. I’ve been working so much lately, and the light at work just isn’t conducive to fine work. I’m off tonight, and don’t have plans for the first time in ages, so I should have them done in time for my FO Friday post.

Instead, I got started on the Milo I mentioned last week. I have a mailing deadline coming up next week, so it needs to get done.

I’m also still working on hats for CLICK for Babies. That’s the purple thing in my photo.

So, what are you working on these days? Let me know in the comments. I’ll see you over at the Yarn Along.

Have a great Wednesday!

Compassion Tuesday: Spotlight on Sakthi

Image

As I mentioned last week, I’ll be introducing you to my current sponsor children over the next few weeks. We’ll be meeting them from oldest to youngest. Today, I would like to introduce you to Sakthi.

However, in order to do that, we first have to start with Soumya.

Soumya

Soumya was my second sponsor child and my first girl. She lives near Trivandrum on the southernmost tip of India. I sponsored her for approximately 13 years until she graduated from Compassion’s program at the age of 19. I plan on giving Soumya her own post at a later date.

Sakthi

When Soumya graduated, Compassion sent me another little girl from India for me to consider sponsoring. For me, there was nothing to consider, and so I immediately began my relationship with a little girl named Sakthi.

Sakthi was five years old when I began sponsoring her. In the five years since, she has grown up a lot!

In her most recent picture, which I received this year, Sakthi had traded her Western attire for a traditional salwar-kameez.

I’m not sure when it becomes customary for girls in India to make this change, but I remember when Soumya did the same thing.

Letters from Sakthi are unique as she is the only child I’ve had who writes to me in English. It’s kind of nice, but because she is still so young, and English is not her first, or even second language, I often wonder if she would be able to express herself better in her own tongue.

Her handwriting is improving. That’s fun to see. 🙂

In one of her earlier letters, she answered a questionnaire about her favorite things. Take a look at her best friend’s name.

PhotoEditor-1442343345952

Isn’t that cool? That just served as confirmation to me that we were meant for each other.

I am looking forward to many more years as her sponsor.

There are many girls in India waiting for sponsors. Perhaps one of them is waiting for you.
